Here are additional guidelines for the paper discussants, as we start this activity next Friday. Thanks to Eva for asking about it.
As discussants, you will engage the class about a number of topics that you think are important. The topics can be directly related to the content of your paper (e.g. particular insights of interest), and also extend what the paper talks about (e.g. personal experience of the students in the class, implications of this research in society, future research questions), as slide 2 of the paper logistics pdf mentions.
Your work would be directed towards defining/summarizing these questions, and your presentation would give you the flow as you lead the class. Think of it as a Q&A, where you will prepare the Qs and engage the class to get the As.
The format is open. As examples, you can use a combination of open-ended questions for students to talk about, and of multiple-choice questions, for which you could use an online poll to collect real-time answers. You could also use pointers to other resources (e.g. if you wanted the audience to watch a short, existing YouTube video related to your question). Any creative way of engaging the class is welcome!
Finally, please notice that the rest of the students were not required to read the paper in full depth, but to get familiar with its content (through reading the abstract & introduction, and skimming through the other sections), to the point that they can contribute to the discussion.
