Official announcements

Dear students,

We are working on finalizing your grades. We will not be done by Monday – so don’t be alarmed if you don’t see your grade on IS-academia – but we will be done next week. As soon as we are done, we will announce the grades to you, and then there will be two days in which you can review the grading and bring to us any concerns that you may have, before we submit the grades to IS-academia.

We owe you an apology and an explanation for this delay, as well as the delays in grading your midterm, quizzes, and OPs. POCS was designed with a different number of students in mind. The assignments are designed explicitly to motivate you to think of your own solutions. As you can guess, grading the resulting diverse set of solutions correctly and fairly is a big challenge: it is hard to parallelize the grading across staff members, and we have to make multiple passes and adjust our grading scheme to accommodate the different solutions we encounter. We have been happy to face this challenge, and we enjoyed reading your OPs and exams. Unfortunately, grading such assignments does not scale well. This year we had more students than anticipated, and we were not able to adapt.
