Dear students,

During our lab sessions of today, some of you faced an issue with Q7 of Lab 0 on some Windows machines. Indeed, when “traceroute” is executed on the virtual machine (VM) running on a Windows host machine (HM), it shows only the default gateway, and all remaining network devices on the route are starred:

lca2@lca2-vm:~$ traceroute facebook.com

traceroute to facebook.com (157.240.17.35), 30 hops max, 60 byte packets

 1  cv-svc-ico1-2.epfl.ch (10.0.2.2)  2.179 ms  2.160 ms  2.146 ms

 2  * * *

 3  * * *

 4  * * *

If you have a Windows HM and if you are facing the same output on the VM, please trace the route on your HM (instead of the VM) using the command “tracert” in the Command Prompt. In this case, Wireshark should run on the HM to capture the “tracert” traffic.

Kind regards,

Your TA Team
