Do not upgrade to macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 if you want virtualbox to work

It's not really a question: just sharing my experiences with the macOS users in the class.

TL;DR Don't upgrade to the latest version of macOS Big Sur if you still want to be able to do the labs :)

There is currently no stable version of Virtualbox that will work with macOS Big Sur 11.0.1:

I, unfortunately, did the upgrade, and now I cannot boot a single VM from Virtualbox.

The fix seems to upgrade to a test version of VM (x.17), but in order to do this, you'll have to downgrade the security on your mac...quite a boring procedure I might add.

Hi,

I'm using Virtualbox 6.1.16 r140961 on macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 without any problem ;)

Good for you then :). I had the same versions as you did, and it started crashing all of a sudden...

In case it's crashing like it did for me, the steps described in this thread worked for me (https://www.virtualbox.org/ticket/19795#comment:57).

1. Disable SIP on your mac: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/security/disabling_and_enabling_system_integrity_protection
2. Get the latest test version of Virtualbox (I have 6.1.17 r141652 (Qt5.6.3))
3. Install it, restart your computer, and hopefully, it should all work out.

Cheers.

Also note that you can install your VM on the latest version of VMware fusion 12 pro (free with epfl student license) and it also works :)
