Dear students,

As you know, our midterm is taking place tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 12.

Location and rules

You can take the exam wherever you want, and you can consult any book or notes you want, but you have to complete the exam on your own. Collaboration is not allowed.

If you have expressed need or wish to take the exam in class, please come to class at the time of the exam. We will have printed exams.

Logistics

Given the requests we received from you:

  • The midterm will become available on Moodle at 15h30.
  • It will stop being available at 17h45 sharp.

We will delay the start by 15 min relative to the lectures, to give ample time to those of you who will be taking the midterm in class to arrive and get settled. The exam was designed to last for 2 hours; we have added 15 extra minutes for printing and scanning.

The exam will become available on two different Moodle modules:

  • Midterm 2021: online version. If you choose this one, you will submit by completing a set of Moodle quizzes. Every time you complete a quiz, please click "Submit", then "Submit all and finish," otherwise we will not be able to see your submission.
  • Midterm 2021: print & scan version. If you choose this one, you will download the exam as a PDF, complete it, and upload it.
Either way, you have to submit by 17h45. The midterm will close at that moment, and you will not be able to upload any more, so please be careful to submit on time.

You can submit as many attempts as you want. Only the last one will count. We strongly recommend that you submit intermediate attempts well before the exam closes, just in case something goes wrong in the last minute.

Support during the exam

If you have a question during the exam, join our Discord server and go to a voice channel that has an assistant (or myself) in it; if no such voice channel is available (because we are all helping someone else), then go to an empty voice channel and one of us will join you as soon as possible.

Do not use any Discord textual channel to ask questions or discuss during the exam.

If we want to announce something during the exam (e.g., a correction or a clarification), we will do it on Discord, on the midterm-announcements channel. So, please keep an eye on it.

Exam content

The exam will consist of three problems:

  • Problem 1: short questions (5 points)
  • Problem 2 (30 points)
  • Problem 3 (15 points)
If you choose the online version of the exam, please make sure to complete all three quizzes.

You are free to answer in English or in French. If a question does not make sense, you can always ask for a clarification.

Start from the questions that seem easier to you. If a question seems hard but you have ideas on how to approach it, do your best. There are no negative points. Grading is adjusted to difficulty.

Best of luck!

Your teaching team.
